Bronze Age burial mound
Bronze
Age burial mound, c. 1500–800 BC (Late Bronze Age)
What is this?
The burial mound was constructed around 3,000 years ago during the Bronze Age. A deceased person was buried beneath this mound, along with objects that were of great value at the time.
How were people buried?
In the Bronze Age, the dead were usually buried in a coffin or on a pyre. The grave pit was then covered and a mound of sand and turf was raised.
Why a mound?
It makes the grave visible in the landscape. It was a special place to honour the deceased and perhaps also to show that an important family or group lived there.
This hill is situated close to the walking route network, on the right-hand side of the sandy path (Turnhoutsepad) heading towards het Zwartven.
