People often get the pronunciation wrong, but it’s easier if you add a hyphen: Bele-ven. There’s certainly plenty to ‘ beleven’ (experience), especially if you’re a birdwatcher. A true paradise for many birds – the spoonbill is a regular sight here, and it’s a breeding ground for various meadow birds. From a wooden deck shaped like a mammoth, you’ll have a magnificent view over the Beleven. Sandy paths criss-cross the ‘ Beleven’ nature reserve, with wide verges and hedgerows; ‘Suskes Klompenpedje’ (7.5 km) – as the name suggests, you can follow the wooden clogs; a printed map of the route is available at ‘ de Hollandershoeve ’ and ‘ Visit Reusel-De Mierden’. ‘Het Beleven ’ lies in a bowl-shaped depression. And to think that until recently, this area was nothing but maize fields. The deep drainage ditches have been filled in and most of the enriched soil has been removed.
