Just south of Tilburg and Eindhoven lies De Brabantse Hei , right in the heart of the Brabantse Kempen and a stone’s throw from the Belgian border. At this beautiful spot, situated on the Turnhoutse Heide, Johnny and Inge keep over 200 beef cattle of various magnificent breeds, such as Belgian Blue, Piemontese and Blonde d’Aquitaine. Johnny’s parents built up the farm from 1973 onwards. Initially, they focused on pigs, but switched to cattle from 1980. Johnny is absolutely mad about farm life and, together with Inge, has been running ‘De Brabantse Hei’ since 2010. As well as the happy cows, which spend at least half the year outdoors, and their calves, which stay with their mothers for the first five months, the farm also has a petting zoo. This is situated amongst the tents, making it easy to keep an eye on the little ones from your deckchair in front of your tent. Johnny and Inge practise ‘crowdbutching’, which means that everyone buys a cut of the cow; once all the meat has been sold, the cow is slaughtered, so there’s never any meat left over. In their farm shop, they have delicious BBQ packs made from their own cows. That way, you don’t have to spend too long thinking about what to have for dinner!
