Koningkyriepad (the story)
Life was not always easy in the Brabant countryside. The farmers had to work hard. And despite all the ploughing, planting and fertilising, the poor sandy soil yielded little. The farms were relatively small. Setbacks such as a season that was too wet often had disastrous consequences. They found comfort and hope in their Catholic faith, but also in stories about gnomes. These kind-hearted creatures would secretly carry out odd jobs for a farmer who was ill or in need of help. Or was it, after all, the sense of community amongst the local farmers?
