De Gloeiige – The story of the cursed lord of Eersel
Route length: 16.5 km. Route duration: 3 hours
Here in the Brabant village of Eersel, some two hundred years ago, people didn’t have much money. Yet they were happy and content. Except for one man. He was alone. Without a wife, children or friends. That wasn’t really surprising. For this man had but one dream: to become rich… In de Kempen, friends and family loved to gather in the evenings. They would tell each other scary stories. The story of ‘ de Kempen ’ was a particular favourite. This fiery ghostly apparition would appear all over the area. Here, he left his mark, including charred footprints that can still be found everywhere… Once upon a time, the Gloeiige was a stately landowner from Eersel. But because of his greed, a curse now rests upon him. Discover why the Gloeiige was cursed. And where you might bump into him…
A vast heathland where the Gloeiige committed his greatest crime. He robbed a poor weaver and left him unconscious on the heath. The Gloeiige still roams these parts; who knows, you might bump into him along your route.
Weebosch
The Gloeiige decides he wants to become the steward of a large estate. To this end, he fiddles with land surveys in the area around Eersel. More land for the inhabitants of the village of Weebosch in exchange for silver coins.
Boksheide
More land for Weebosch, but this comes at the expense of the land belonging to the inhabitants of the hamlet of Boksheide. They do not trust the measurements or their new land steward, but ‘the devil always shits on the biggest pile’.
